It happened...

It was a warm Father's Day, June 17th, 2007. We were in the upper deck enjoying a day at the old ball park. It was the bottom of the 6th inning. Theriot was up to bat. John was sitting on the end of the row next to my dad, my mom and I next to them. However this is where the story has very different endings depending on who you ask. John's version is that he saw the ball coming, a pop fly, one that was not going to get a way this time (last month at the game, he made contact with the ball, but it was out of his reach). He reached up, and slightly over, and there it was, in his bare hands, he held it up, kissed his wife, waved to the crowd in all it's glory. My dad's version...the ball was coming right at him...he felt the back of John's hands in his palm...his son-in-law stole his baseball right out of his hands...on Father's Day...

Who is this man?

Last night we were doing what we normally do at 6:15 on a Sunday night, sitting in church, in our normal seats about mid way down the auditorium, listening to the sermon. You ask why after all these months, of not posting, why I would post about our typical Sunday night. Oh but friends, it was no typical Sunday night. Around 6:15, which is mid way through the church service, a man enters. Not just any man. Bono. Yes, you heard me correctly…Bono…U2, Bono…entered the church. As he passed our row, I sarcastically said to John…that guy thinks he’s Bon... but before the phrase came out of my mouth, my jaw dropped as I saw everyone in our area of the auditorium do the exact same thing..stare. There was a quiet murmur throughout the back half of the church as people silently mouthed to their neighbor…’Is that Bono???’. I watched in amazement. I was curious. I looked at people’s faces as the stared, shared puzzled looks, peeked around those in front of them to get a glimpse.

He sat 4 rows directly in front of us. He listened, he worshiped, he prayed, he distracted all those that sat around him. The red glasses, the jacket, the earrings, the pinky ring, the hair, the rough face. As everyone tried unsuccessfully to focus back on the sermon, my mind raced. Would our reaction to Jesus himself entering the church evoke the same reaction? Would we stop and gawk, without asking who he really was? Would our hearts pound and murmurs of excitement surround us? Would I know it was Jesus?

It has not been confirmed if the man that ‘snuck’ into the church service last night was actually ‘Bono’. There has been mixed reports, and I have to admit that I really have no idea. If I had to guess, it was most likely NOT him but was definitely someone wanting to be him. After the service he went directly to the elders before leaving about 15 minutes later, no entourage, no security, no hoopla...and as quick as he came, he was gone.

We’re Expecting!

The newest member of the family will arrive later today. Our Mac Book Pro is currently in the hands of the FedEx man or woman and will be arriving shortly. Although a little nervous of switch to the Mac world, we anxiously await the arrival.
Tips on how to handle the newest Mitchell are appreciated.

Our Church's Little Devil

A funny e-mail came out today from our church's childrens ministry...

During the 5:30 service yesterday at church, some people might have noticed the Nursery pager flashing "666" repeatedly, we couldn't get it to stop. Please be advised, this was not a spiritual warfare situation, I was paging 999.....Thanks go out to Aaron, who eventually realized the display was mounted upside down this week!

8 minutes to early

The Chicago Bears played Monday night football against a not so good team this week. John and I were fairly excited to sit down and watch the game but after the poor showing in the first half we were down by 20 and hadn't seen a good play by the Bears yet! We continued to watch the 3rd quarter...time after time, passes getting intercepted, fumbles...we were starting to looking like the bad news Bears again. 9 minutes left in the 4th quarter and we were down by 2 touchdowns...we decided to watch the Bears take offense one more time before turning in as the game was really long and we were tired and embarrassed for the Bears at this point. And that is when it happened...Rex Grossman got the ball knocked out of his hands one last time....and we were done. Too disgusted to watch any more we turned off the TV and went to bed.

As I was getting ready the next morning I was listening to Good Morning America and I hear 'The biggest upset in football history' ...and I begin to think to myself...wow it was bad, the Bears played terrible but the 'biggest upset' I think that's a little extreme. And then I hear...Coming from a 20 point deficit, the Bears win late in the 4th quarter'...Wait...what? Did I hear that correctly? It couldn't be, we watched everything but 8 minutes. I yell down to John who was eating breakfast that they just said the Bears won. In disbelief we turn on Sports Center to find out that what they were saying was true. We went to bed 8 minutes to early, and missed what they some around here are calling the 'Game of the Century....' What kind of fans are we?
